Sustainable Desalination: Veolia Presents its Innovative Solutions in Oman

Estelle Brachlianoff presenting sustainable desalination in Oman

Veolia, a global leader in sustainable desalination solutions with over 50 years of experience and more than 2,300 installations built worldwide, organized a major event in Oman titled 'Thema: Sustainable Desalination'. This meeting, which took place at the iconic Sur plant site and was broadcast online, allowed the Group to present its vision and innovations in seawater desalination.

Facing growing global water scarcity challenges, Veolia presented its seawater desalination strategy and innovative technologies for more sustainable desalination at the Sur desalination facility in Oman.

Discover Veolia's global strategy in seawater desalination

The event was an opportunity to unveil Veolia's 2030 seawater desalination strategy, which aims to maintain its leadership position while doubling its operation and maintenance capacity. With 18% of global installed desalination capacity and a particularly strong presence in the Middle East (19% of regional capacity), the Group produces 13 million m3 of desalinated water daily and stands as a global leader in this field. This ambition is part of the GreenUp 24-27 strategic program, demonstrating the Group's commitment to responsible ecological transformation.

During this presentation, Veolia highlighted its innovative technologies, particularly the BarrelTM, a revolutionary solution that significantly reduces energy consumption and environmental impact of desalination facilities. This innovation offers considerable advantages: a 3% to 5% reduction in the average cost of a desalination plant, 1.5% energy savings, and a 25% smaller footprint than conventional systems.

Desalination is much more than a technology, it's a strategic response to major challenges of our time. Through this Thema, we show how Veolia is transforming this industry by combining breakthrough innovation and environmental commitment. Our leadership in this field is no coincidence: it's the result of a bold vision where operational excellence and ecological transformation are one. This pioneering approach allows us today to pave the way for truly sustainable desalination, serving future generations.

Participants also discovered concrete examples of achievements, notably the Sur plant in Oman, which perfectly illustrates Veolia's sustainable and combined approach to desalination. This cutting-edge facility, which runs 100% on solar energy during the day, produces 131,000 m³ of drinking water daily and uses the most advanced technologies, including the Barrel™ system. This technology is a plug-and-play nanofiltration and reverse osmosis device that desalinates seawater to the strictest standards. Scalable in design, this modular system can treat capacity ranging from 400 to 50,000 m3 per day.
