2023 Veolia Creative Arts Scholarships Awarded

Celebrating 16 years of its Creative Arts Scholarship initiative, the Veolia Mulwaree Trust has named three new artists as the recipients of the $4,000 scholarships to better their artistic disciplines.

Awarded scholarships in 2023 are:

  • Weaver and natural dye artist Hannah Cooper from Bundanoon
  • Expressive portrait and abstract painter Emmaleen Miller from Sutton Forest
  • Screen artist Miah-Tya Nungheena Gowland from Bungendore

The artists received their scholarships from Veolia Creative Arts Scholarship Patron Jennifer Lamb at a presentation held in Goulburn earlier this month.

“The Veolia Creative Arts Scholarship is one of only a limited number of scholarship opportunities available to rural and regional artists, and I am very proud that since 2008 it has supported 56 local artists to pursue their creative endeavours,” Ms Lamb told guests at the presentation.

Through the duration of the Veolia Creative Arts Scholarship, artists have been supported in the fields of dance, theatre, drawing, printmaking, textile art, painting, digital art, writing, music composition and performance, ceramics, screen arts, creative design and photography.

Artists in any discipline across the region are encouraged to consider applying for the scholarship in 2024. The Veolia Creative Arts Scholarship program will be accepting applications early next year with dates and further information available at www.veolia.com or by phoning (02) 48222786.

About the artists

Hannah Cooper – 2023 Veolia Creative Arts Study Scholarship

Hannah Cooper – 2023 Veolia Creative Arts Study Scholarship

Hannah is a self-taught weaver, teaching herself basic techniques on a rigid heddle loom in 2017 and concentrating on simple plain weave blankets made from locally-sourced superfine merino wool. She now weaves on a 12-shaft countermarch floor loom, utilising more complex structures but maintaining a focus on using ethically-sourced fibres. Hannah naturally-dyes thread for use in her artworks.

Working from her Bundanoon studio, Hannah uses traditional cloth-making techniques to produce domestic textiles. Hannah says the production of “ordinary” domestic textiles has influenced my artistic weaving, which plays with (and resists) the formal language of geometric abstraction and the structural and creative constraints of weaving.

Hannah was recently offered artistic representation and a solo exhibition in 2024 by a new, independent local gallery in the Wingecarribee Shire - Jennings Kerr in Robertson. This will be her first opportunity to produce a cohesive body of work and to exhibit it publicly. The Veolia Creative Arts Scholarship will support Hannah in obtaining materials to weave pieces and to finish them for the exhibition.

Emmaleen Miller - 2023 Veolia Creative Arts Practice Scholarship

Emmaleen Miller - 2023 Veolia Creative Arts Practice Scholarship

Emmaleen Miller’s art practice focuses on expressive portrait and abstract painting, often enriched with vibrant colours and bold brush strokes. Emmaleen is an emerging artist from Sutton Forest who graduated from the National Art School in 2022 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Emmaleen says she is compelled to portray the rich and intricate life stories she sees in the human face. Inspired by Wendy Sharpe, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso her abstract works are rich with colour and texture, full of light and happiness. "I think when I draw or paint it helps me to process the world more. Things make more sense and are less chaotic - more beautiful".

Supported by the Veolia Creative Arts Scholarship in 2023, Emmaleen will be working on a body of work for her first solo exhibition at Hillview Sculpture Park and Gallery in the Southern Highlands in June 2023. She will create at least 10 major works for the exhibition and the theme for the exhibition is "hope for a better future". Her work will be with acrylic and oil on canvas and mixed media.

Miah-Tya Nungheena Gowland - 2023 Veolia Creative Arts Practice Scholarship

Miah-Tya Nungheena Gowland - 2023 Veolia Creative Arts Practice Scholarship

Bungendore screen artist Miah-Tya creates every aspect of a film, from the pre-production to post-production and is passionate about perfecting every process.

Through graphic design, film, motion graphics and photography, Miah-Tya expresses personal stories and creates content. Screen arts is her most loved art form, as she thoroughly enjoys every element/process that goes into a film. From writing the script, to planning the pre-production, to directing/producing/working on the cinematography/lighting and audio of the actual filming process and finally the post-production.

Miah-Tya’s work showcases themes and storylines that are important to her, such as showcasing the teenage life of kids that grew up in a rural Australian town and encouraging people to lessen their screen time, to instead enjoy the outside world.

The Veolia Creative Arts Scholarship will support Miah-Tya with access to higher quality equipment to achieve a professional styled short film. This short film, titled 'The Gap Year' will follow two teenagers and will showcase the Palerang region.
