Sharps Waste

Sharps waste is any used needles, syringes or surgical instruments generated from healthcare activities, medical research, veterinary care, and drug administration.

Sharps have the potential to cause injury and are likely to be contaminated, posing a risk of infection or illness if they penetrate the skin. Therefore it is essential to follow safe procedures when using and disposing of sharps. Sharps waste should be stored in designated sharps waste containers.

Does Veolia collect sharps waste?

Veolia’s highly trained and experienced team can safely collect and correctly sterilise or dispose your sharps waste at our thermal destruction or autoclave facility.

We provide a range of sharps containers and can tailor a collection schedule to suit your facility’s needs. Your sharps waste will be collected by our dedicated hazardous waste fleet and transported to a specialised waste facility, where we sterilise or dispose waste according to legislative requirements.

The waste stream is taken to our thermal destruction facility and processed through an automatically controlled waste feed that ensures efficient combustion and complete destruction.  The waste is exposed to a chamber temperature of 1000 degrees Celsius, and the emissions are controlled to surpass European Standards, which exceed current Australian standards. Equipment that can be sterilised and reused will be processed at an autoclave facility.
