2nd edition of the global Barometer of Ecological Transformation: Citizens around the world are ready to change to protect their health in the face of climate change

Le baromètre de Veolia, deuxième édition

According to the results of the 2nd edition of the Barometer of Ecological Transformation conducted by Veolia and Elabe, a large majority of citizens around the world are aware of the threats of climate change to their health. They say they are ready to bear the costs and changes necessary for protective ecological solutions.

“Ecological transformation: are we (still) ready?"

Is the world ready for a profound ecological transformation? A crucial question that arises in light of the results of the second edition of the Barometer of Ecological Transformation, conducted by Veolia in partnership with Elabe. This new study reveals a growing global awareness: conducted in 26 countries, it sheds light on the attitudes, concerns and aspirations of the planet's inhabitants in the face of the climate emergency.

An uncompromising observation

The results are clear: populations around the world are increasingly concerned about the effects of climate disruption on their health and quality of life. The survey reveals that 97% of the world's inhabitants believe that health is the number one issue to be taken into account in local decisions on water, waste and energy, even before the final price.

64% of global respondents feel vulnerable to a health risk caused by climate disruption.

65% of global respondents think that a solution that promotes the preservation of their health would encourage them to change their habits or accept a slightly higher cost.

66% of global respondents are convinced that inaction will cost more than ecological action.

97% of global respondents believe that health is the priority issue for local decisions regarding water, waste and energy, with the final price coming last.

A call to action and the implementation of concrete solutions

This growing concern translates into an urgent call for action. Citizens say they are ready, in the majority, to embrace the necessary changes to generalize existing solutions against climate change and pollution. They recognize that the cost of inaction will be much higher than the cost of action.

Faced with this awareness, Veolia positions itself as a major player in the ecological transformation to protect the health of populations. The Group is accelerating the deployment of innovative solutions to reduce pollution, preserve resources and adapt to the impacts of climate change, while calling for concerted global action to accelerate the fight against climate disruption.

Decarbonization, depollution and resource regeneration solutions that help improve the quality of life and health of citizens served by the essential services provided by Veolia, in water, energy and waste. Through its new 2024-2027 GreenUp strategic plan, Veolia is fully committed to these objectives of greening activities in the service of the planet and communities.

"The results of this barometer confirm the strong expectation of citizens for accessible and fair ecological solutions, protecting their health and their territories. It is an absolute priority that will guide our action in the years to come."

About the methodology:

The survey was conducted in 26 countries across 5 continents, reaching more than 29,500 individuals (between 1,000 and 2,000 per country). Countries were chosen for their demographic weight, their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, and to ensure diversity in ecological political and cultural backgrounds. Overall, these countries represent nearly 60% of the world's population and 67% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The survey was conducted online from October 17 to December 6, 2023. For each of the 26 countries, a representative sample of residents aged 18 and over was gathered. Frequency: the barometer is published every 18 months (allowing for long-term evolution of representations, opinions, and behaviors).
